There are so many articles and websites touting the greatness of Web 2.0, Social Bookmarking, and how it can help build backlinks and website traffic. What is the truth? What do Web 2.0 sites do for you that others can’t? Let’s take a look.

Web 2.0.

Web 2.0 is the hottest thing on the web right now in terms of improving search engine optimization (SEO) and website traffic. Sites like Squidoo and Hubpages are PR6 plus ranked sites which along with a suite of tools for creating your own “hub” or lens” can provide you with quality backlinks, a high volume of visitors, and a great method of increasing your individual website’s search engine ranking. Web 2.0 sites are extremely Search Engine friendly.

Social Bookmarking

Social Bookmarking sites are also Web 2.0 sites, but they carry the additional aspect of being able to autoupdate rapidly and are very Search Engine friendly. Most of the top Social Bookmarking sites are PR5 or higher and carry a lot of linking power. Social Bookmarking can help your websites create quality backlinks and also provide much needed traffic.

But how do I use Social Bookmarking sites and other Web 2.0 sites to drive traffic to my website?

The answer is by using a methodical strategy which does not include SPAM. By taking measure of the most popular and high PR Web 2.0 sites, like Squidoo and Hubpages for example, and creating pages which provide quality content in 400 to 600 word articles. In these articles, you should highlight keywords which are used as anchor text back to your website. Don’t link back to your home page over and over again. Link back to pages which match your anchor text keywords and are part of the main content on your website. Linking to just your homw page doesn’t provide the help that having multiple links to multiple parts of your site. This also increases your page views when you do get visitors through these links because most visitors ultimately end up visiting your home page and then one or more other pages on your website.

Use Social Bookmarking the same way. Do not just Bookmark your home page. Create a strategy which includes all the pages in your site, but scattered evenly across 30-40 different Social Bookmarking sites. Call it Social Bookmarking saturation, but you do it in a way that doesn’t get your site or account labeled as SPAM. Rome wasn’t built in a day and Google and the other top Search Engines know this. If they see a site increase it’s backlinks by several hundred or thousand in just a few days, then a red flag is bound to come up and you could end up having your site banned. The methodical approach will provide you with quality links and keep you on the road forward.

Using both of these tools with a patient strategy over 3 months with an article posted to 5-6 Web 2.0 sites each week (a unique article) and Social Bookmarking as described above, you should be able to garner a large number of backlinks to your website, but even more importantly, a large number of targeted visitors who are looking for the keywords your site favors the most.
